Sunflowers Against Red: An Acrylic Painting

25 09 2008

One of my all time favorite current artist is Edward Noott. Never heard of him? Your not alone. I found him browsing on Art.com, which I’m sure I’m suppose to be morally opposed to as an artist. But oddly, I’m not just okay with the site, I am obsessed with it!  love browsing that site, it’s a great place for inspiration if you ask me. Anyway I was poking around and found Mr. Noott’s amazing sunflower painting ‘Jug of Sunflowers’ and I loved loved loved it. Any normal person would have then bought the print right? Well being the non-normal person that I am I immediately became obsessed with painting my own sunflower painting. Our outcomes are very different, but I want to give him full inspiration credit- Hear that kids, plagiarism is wrong. Give credit where credit is due. With out further ado, My sunflower paintings:

Full                                                                       Detail

Pretty snazzy, right? This is one painting that sits out in my room most of the time. Not only I was I happy with the overall look of the painting, I love the feelings this painting stirs up in me. I remember clearly finding my inspiration, immediately sitting down and painting it in about two maybe three hours start to finish. Cool, right?

I love this paintings loose shapes and exposed brushwork. It gives it that hurried feel. But in a relaxed sort of way. If that makes any sense at all. By all means I’m far too defined here to be considered impressionstic, but I like the textures that the strokes make. To me something about it still says ‘impression’. Hmm.

This art analyzing stuff it rather challenging, ya know it. The words are hard to find.

Anyway, this painting launched a red background obsession that stuck with me for several months (that I may or may not be returning too). It was, again, painted late 2006 a few weeks prior to the Lilly one (last post in case you missed it) I believe. (I certainly like parentheses today huh?) Anywho, I’ve ran out of ramblings. See you soon with another painting, and thanks for checking this one out.

Oh, and p.s. If you have a few moment and $39.99 check out Noott’s painting on art.com, you’ll love it!

Of Lilies and Raindrops: An acrylic painting

22 09 2008

I found this painting on my hard-drive a few days ago and thought I could share it. The original is still MIA, but I’m pretty sure it’s still in the garage from the move…which took place over a year ago… yeah. This one was painted about 2006, one of my most productive painting years. I had just graduated from high school, and spent the summer painting and working at the flower shop. Sigh… Memories. Anyway, I always really liked this piece. It was painted at the height of my flower addiction, and I always felt it was one of my better ones. I love the vibrancy in the red lilies, and the shadowing that there petals naturally create.  After a frustrating day of not getting the background right I decided to paint the arrangement up against a window. And before I knew it was raining outside of my picture. And I really liked the serene effect against the bold lilly. But oh boy can I tell this was painted prior to my drawing class on perspective! The table is a little cringe worthy, don’t look at it! Kidding, this is one I might need to retouch… When I find it that is. Just thought I’d share my little trip down past painting lane.

‘Till next time.

A Venture into the world of How-to: Painting a Mountain

5 09 2008

It’s shocking what you can see on TV today. It can be disturbing, violent or just plain weird. Kids are, undoubtedly greatly being affected by this. But this is not about  the effect of television on America’s youth. Because I however was always an exception to the rule.  Nothing from TV has corrupted me. For this is what I learned from TV:

Okay, well partially. See those mountains? They were painted  a few years ago after I watched some guy on PBS teach me how to paint. It was so awesome, I was sitting there home, sick as a dog, watching the show and at the end I thought, “this guy is such a liar not everyone can suddenly paint a mountain just because he showed them.. Idiot”.   So once I had recovered I got out a canvas and started the painting using his techniques to the best of memory and capability. I was in middle school I believe. And I had to admit, it turned out moderately stellar. Go figure!

I pulled it out the other day looking for new (or well old) art to display on my blog or paint over with something that could be displayed on a blog. It made me crack  up. I decided to sit down and work on it, improve some of the basic forms in it. The  mountain/tree scenario is the same from that fateful day. Because my mountain turned out awesome-tastic. And I remember doing the trees with a fan brush convinced they wouldn’t look good, but I have say I didn’t really think I could do so much better now. The water was, however, well dreadful. Nothing good about it. So I spent some time jazzing that up as well as the sky. Overall I think I re-touched for about an hour.

I must say, I was proved wrong. PBS guy you Rule!

Kids, you have my permission to watch lame local cable TV shows. You never know what you’ll learn.
